America's Best Haunted Houses for Halloween 2026

Every October, thousands of haunts across the country flip on the fog machines. Only a handful are worth a road trip. This year's national rankings are in, and we've rounded up the attractions that fear seekers are voting for, plus a few legends that belong on every bucket list.

The 2026 USA TODAY 10Best Winners

Each year, a panel of haunt experts nominates 20 attractions and readers vote on the final ten, judging actors, sets, special effects and value for money. Here's how 2026 shook out.

No. 1: Cutting Edge Haunted House (Fort Worth, Texas). The champion again. Cutting Edge fills a century-old former meatpacking plant with multiple stories of live actors and elaborate scenes, and it holds Guinness World Records for the world's largest walk-through haunted house. Plan for a long walk through the dark.

No. 2: Bennett's Curse Haunted House (Dundalk, Maryland). After 26 years, this is the haunt's final season at the closed Eastpoint Mall, so this October is your last chance to see it in its current home. One ticket strings together Halloween 3D, The Crypts, House of the Demons and Ravenbrook Asylum into one continuous run.

No. 3: Massacre Haunted House (Montgomery, Illinois). A Chicagoland favorite that keeps climbing the national rankings.

No. 4: Netherworld Haunted House (Stone Mountain, Georgia). Atlanta's long-running scream machine is celebrating its 30th season, known for huge creature effects and movie-quality sets.

No. 5: Creep LA (Los Angeles, California). Immersive, small-group horror theater that puts you inside the story rather than walking past it.

No. 6: Sir Henry's Haunted Trail (Plant City, Florida). An outdoor trail haunt in the Tampa area.

No. 7: Halloween Nights at Eastern State Penitentiary (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania). Horror inside a real, crumbling 19th-century prison. The setting does half the work.

No. 8: Nightmare on 13th (Salt Lake City, Utah). One of the West's best-known indoor haunts.

No. 9: Reaper's Revenge (Scranton, Pennsylvania). A multi-attraction haunt in northeastern Pennsylvania.

No. 10: Fear Columbus Haunted House (Columbus, Ohio). Rounding out the list for the Midwest.

Legends Worth the Trip

Erebus Haunted Attraction (Pontiac, Michigan). Hauntworld named Erebus the scariest haunted attraction in America for 2026. It's a four-story journey that has been terrifying guests for close to 30 years.

Haunted Overload (Lee, New Hampshire). An outdoor trail through the New England woods, ranked third on Hauntworld's 2026 list. Go after dark on a cold night for the full effect.

Halloween Horror Nights 35 (Universal Orlando). Ten haunted houses this year, mixing original nightmares with big franchises like Evil Dead Burn and a house built around Ozzy Osbourne.

Dorney Park Halloween Haunt (Allentown, Pennsylvania). Voted one of the best theme park Halloween events of 2026, with a brand-new maze, Blair Witch: No Signal, inspired by The Blair Witch Project.

How to Survive (and Enjoy) a Haunted House

Buy timed or fast-pass tickets online. Prime October weekends sell out, and the standby line can run hours.

Go on a weeknight or early in the season if you want shorter lines and actors who aren't yet hoarse.

Wear closed-toe shoes and clothes you can move in. Many haunts have uneven floors, tight squeezes and pitch-black hallways.

Know the rules. Most haunts are look-but-don't-touch on both sides, and some offer a separate "touch" or "extreme" night for those who want more.

Check age and health guidance before you go. Strobe lights, fog and loud effects are standard, and many haunts aren't recommended for young kids.

Don't be the person at the front of the conga line. Or do. Your choice.

Which haunt is on your list this year? Tell us in the comments, and send us your best scare story. We may feature it in Nightmare News.
